Wonderful package, but I absolutely dislike Goodman Games's decision not to brand the DCC versions the same way as 5e ones. That's literally the only reason I'm getting the latter instead of the former. Silly. Also silly that 5e and DCC versions of Caverns of Thracia were written concurrently so they differ in text, and not just in stat blocks. OAR9.5 does not include the original, which breaks the whole concept behind OAR line—which is to include the darn originals. We had seen something similar with OAR8, which also doesn't include the originals. I am not hopeful for the future of this product line.

Apparently Goodman Games shared the following at DungeonCon:

The implication is that the legendary Judges Guild module City State of the Invincible Overlord will be re-released by Goodman Games as part of the Original Adventures Reincarnated line. That is a deluxe line that reprints classics in letter-sized hardbacks, includes historical commentary, and conversion for either D&D fifth edition or Dungeon Crawl Classics.

Judges Guild produced some of the best material that hasn't been surpassed—Wilderlands of High Fantasy, City State of the Invincible Overlord, Ready Ref Sheets, just to name some—but was ultimately an unsuccessful company. They spent most of their company life lingering and licensing out their most attractive IP. That is how we got Wilderlands of High Fantasy boxed set by Necromancer Games, and then later two deluxe compilations by Goodman Games. Bud Judges Guild got cancelled hard when son (Robert Bledsaw II) and grandson (Robert Bledsaw III) of the original owner, Robert Bledsaw, went all anti-Semitic on social media. Due to this Judges Guild was removed from DriveThruRPG, and everyone in the industry broke ties with them. Goodman Games reached a special agreement to finish the second deluxe set without paying any royalties to the living Bledsaws. But all of that was in 2020. See here, here, and here for more details.

We know that Goodman Games later acquired all Judges Guild IP tied with Jaquays (see OAR7 Dark Tower, OAR9 Caverns of Thracia, and OAR9.5 The Hellpits of Nightfang), but it is unclear if that is the case with Wilderlands material as well. According to Aaron James Bledsaw, Goodman Games has licensed multiple Wilderlands IP:

We don't know much more since Goodman Games still hasn't announced anything yet—at least not officialy. Perhaps Bledsaws will use the money to refund backers they delivered nothing to.

As a big fan of Wilderlands, I must say that I am a bit surprised by including the Invincible Overlord on the cover. That tells me Goodman Games (or rather, the person responsible for the project) doesn't understand what City State of the Invincible Overlord is about. I hope they will reprint the original as they have done so far. But then again, they decided not to reprint the originals for OAR8 Grimtooth's Old School Traps and OAR9.5 The Hellpits of Nightfang, breaking the promise behind the line. I was not impressed by how OAR9 was done, nor with all the bloat that came with it. City State of the Invincible Overlord is about the map and terse key. I hope they reprint the original map in addition to whatever else they create. Either way, I will be backing this in order to get high-quality digital version of the originals.

Whatever happens in the end, the more Judges Guild material we manage to preserve, the better. I am looking forward to the official announcement from Goodman Games.

Arduin

Dave Hargrave was a mad man. A very creative mad man. You might never play Arduin as written, which just like Palladium Fantasy was a bunch of AD&D 1E house rules, but you will walk away inspired like never before.

• Arduin Trilogy. Compiles Arduin Grimoire Vol 1, 2, and 3. I still use special ability charts presented herein.
• Arduin II. A first attempt to make a functional, stand-alone game after TSR and Gary turned on anyone who dared hack it.

Palladium Books

Palladium Books is a troubled publisher, but I still have a soft spot for their early fantasy work. Black and white illustrations galore!

Palladium Fantasy RPG 1E

• The Palladium Fantasy® Role-Playing Game Revised Edition. This was basically a bunch of house rules for AD&D 1E. I'd never play it as-is, but love reading it for inspiration. Many cool ideas, from occupations to different take on alignment, and so on.
• Palladium RPG Book II: Old Ones. My favourite of the lot. Plenty of fully fleshed out settlements with lovely maps.
• Palladium RPG Book III: Adventures on the High Seas.
• Palladium RPG Book IV: Adventures in the Northern Wilderness.
• Palladium RPG Book V: “Further” Adventures in the Northern Wilderness.
• Palladium RPG Book VI: Island at the Edge of the World.
• Palladium RPG Book VII: Yin-Sloth Jungles. My second favourite. Monstrous cities!

Weapons, Armours and Castles

These are illustrated guides to various weapons, armours, and yes, castles, one might use in their fantasy game. I love thumbing through them for inspiration.

• The Palladium Book of Weapons & Armor.

Chaosium

A well known publisher of Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, and Pendragon. Although I'm not interested in their rules, I've always been fascinated by Glorantha.

These are all modules from the first edition era. Just how I like them.

• Apple Lane. Memorable “beginner” setting.
• RuneQuest Old School Source Pack.
• Pavis. A fully fleshed city.
• Big Rubble.
• Griffin Mountain.
• Cults of Prax. One of the best takes on religion in fantasy.

Yes, they have the 3E statblocks, but core of the texts focus on the flavour, descriptions, and similar, rather than purely mechanics. I found them rather easy to steal from.

With that being said, here are some of my favourites:

• Underdark Adventure Guide. Guidance and ideas to get inspired with when making Underdark work. Includes few random tables, and several locations as well.
• Complete Guide to Beholders. Who could say no to more Beholder fluff? Plus, they make for great additions to any underdark.
• Complete Guide to Liches. Interesting Lich variants. Doesn't read like a poor copy of DMGR7 or REF5.
• Complete Guide to Doppelgangers. I always appreciate more ideas for these underutilised adversaries.
• Dungeon Crawl Classics Presents: Blackdirge's Dungeon Denizens. What can I say except that I'm a sucker for discounted bestiaries.
• Lethal Legacies: Traps of the World Before. Sixty non-gimmicky non-instant-TPK traps.
• Aerial Adventure Guide: Sky Captain's Handbook. Itching to run a sky-based campaign? Then this one will help you.
• Dungeon Crawl Classics #51: Castle Whiterock. A mega-dungeon and mega-campaign, all rolled in one 800-page tome.
• DM Campaign Tracker. Even if you don't use the forms as-is, they might inspire you to create your own.
